2010 Porsche Boxster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key on the 2010 Porsche Boxster?

On this vehicle it means a metal key, cut to the specific profile your lock cylinders were machined to accept. There is no push-button start, no proximity detection. You put the key in, turn it, and the ignition responds to the cut of the blade. The 987.2 Boxster uses a folding flip-style key where the blade tucks into the fob body when not in use. The blade itself is what does the work at the door and the ignition.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the Porsche dealer for a replacement key?

Dealers build in shop minimums, diagnostic time, and parts markup. For a 2010 Boxster with a mechanical key the actual work is cutting a blade accurately and confirming it operates every lock on the car. There is no server authorization, no online coding session, no waiting days for a key to be ordered from overseas.

Q: My Boxster key blade snapped off inside the door lock. Is that recoverable, or do I need a new cylinder?

Usually recoverable. Broken key extraction is a standard part of what I do. The 987 door cylinders are accessible, and a snapped blade can typically be pulled without damaging the cylinder, as long as nobody has tried forcing it further in with pliers or a screwdriver first. Once the stub is out, I decode the cut from the broken piece or from another cylinder on the car, then cut a new blade on site.

Q: I do not have any working key for my 2010 Boxster. Can you still make one?

Yes. No key on hand is not a dead end. The key code for the 987 Boxster can be obtained through the VIN, and the lock cylinders themselves can be decoded directly if needed. I come to the car, work from what is there, and cut a replacement on site in Carriage Square or wherever the vehicle is in Oxnard. You do not need to tow it anywhere.

2010 Porsche Boxster Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Carriage Square in Oxnard is a quiet neighborhood, mostly townhomes, the kind of place where everyone parks in a garage and the street goes still after ten. I got a call from a guy out there who drives a 2010 Boxster and had snapped the blade off in his door lock. Not in the ignition, the door. The broken stub was still in the cylinder, and he had no spare.

He figured this was a dealer problem and started looking up tow companies before he called me.

I came out to him. Extracted the broken stub from the door cylinder with picks and a broken key extractor, then decoded the cut from what was left. Cut a new blade on site, tested it in both the door and the ignition. Engine ran. Door locked.

The whole thing took less than an hour and he didn't move the car once. He mentioned the dealer quote he almost accepted. I just nodded. The savings spoke for itself.

Porsche Boxster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does Porsche key replacement have a reputation for being so expensive?▼

A few things stack up on Porsche work. The flip key blade on the 987 Boxster is a high-precision cut, and Porsche cylinders are tight, so the cut has to be accurate. On top of that, dealers fold in diagnostic time and hourly shop rates that have nothing to do with how long the actual key work takes.
