Sunday morning near Oxnard Skate Park, a retired airline captain flagged me down at a waterfront brunch spot. He'd already been burned by another locksmith. Paid full price for what the other guy called a "Porsche smart key" for his 2003 Boxster. The car would crank, fire for about two seconds, then the immobilizer killed the engine. Classic fuel cutoff. The other tech told him the KESSY module was bad and left.
There is no KESSY module on a 986 Boxster. That system didn't show up on Porsches until later cars like the Cayenne and Panamera. The 2003 Boxster uses a transponder key and a Central Locking Unit that handles immobilizer duties. This was a locksmith problem, not a module problem.
I connected through OBD with my IM608, pulled the immobilizer data from the CLU, and saw the issue right away. The previous attempt left a half-written key in the system. I cleared the failed transponder data, read fresh security bytes, calculated the PIN from the CLU dump, and wrote a clean transponder value to a new key. Cut the blade to code on the hood of the car.
He turned the ignition and the engine stayed running. No two-second cutoff. No check engine light. Just a flat-six idling the way it should.
He'd already paid the first locksmith, and I couldn't undo that. But I could make sure the job was actually done right, on site, for way less than the dealer wanted.
