Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2000 Volkswagen Golf Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Up near Serra Cross in Ventura, a college student called me about her 2000 Volkswagen Golf. She'd bought it used with one key, told herself she'd get a spare cut, and then life happened.

A year later the flip hinge finally gave out mid-parking-lot. The blade separated from the fob body and stayed in the door lock. She had the remote half in her hand and nothing she could do with it.

When I got there, she'd already tried to wiggle the blade out herself and was standing next to the car looking at it like it had personally wronged her.

I pulled the broken blade from the lock first, then opened the cracked fob housing on my workbench in the van. The transponder chip was intact. On these older VWs that's usually the case, the chip is tucked in a way that protects it even when the plastic around it gives up. I read the chip data, which let me work from what was already paired to the car rather than starting over from scratch.

Then I decoded the lock, cut two new blades, rebuilt both into fresh flip housings, and transferred the chip into one. I showed her exactly what I'd done so she wasn't just taking my word for it.

Forty minutes from the time I parked. She left with two working keys instead of zero. The dealer comparison came up and she laughed a little, said she'd already called them and they wanted significantly more with a week-plus wait. That part I just nodded at. The job was already done.
