2014 Volkswagen Golf
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2014 Volkswagen Golf Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Near The Collection in Oxnard, I got a call from an independent mechanic. Not a customer who knows nothing about cars. A guy with a lift in his own shop, the kind of person who rebuilds transmissions for fun on weekends.

His 2014 Golf ignition had been getting progressively worse for weeks. The key would go in, catch on the turn, and he'd have to wiggle it just right to get it to rotate. He kept chalking it up to something he'd deal with later. Then one morning it just stopped cooperating entirely.

He'd already called the dealer. The quote was for a full ignition cylinder replacement, a new key, and reprogramming. He was two clicks away from booking the appointment when something made him stop. He figured a locksmith might actually be the right call for this specific problem, even though he could diagnose a transmission in his sleep.

He was right.

I pulled up and looked at the ignition before touching anything. The cylinder wasn't seized and it wasn't dead. The wafers inside had worn down from years of a heavy keychain hanging off the key. That weight puts constant lateral stress on the wafers every time the key sits in the ignition. It's gradual enough that most people don't notice until the day it stops working.

I decoded the lock, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh blade matched to the repaired cylinder. His existing flip fob paired right back up without issue. I laid the old wafers on his workbench next to the new ones so he could see the difference himself. A mechanic appreciates that kind of thing.

He laughed and said he should have called three weeks ago. I told him most people say that.
