I got a call from someone out near Thille, over on the Montalvo side of Ventura. He had a 2003 Volkswagen Golf and a flip key that had been giving him grief for about two weeks. Remote stopped working first. Then one morning it just wouldn't start.
He had already bought a replacement fob shell online and tried to swap it himself. The blade transferred fine, but the car still sat there. He figured he wired the chip wrong or cracked something during the swap. He wasn't totally off.

Even with the correct key blank and a properly seated chip, the remote functions have to be paired to the car. I ran the programming sequence on site, confirmed lock, unlock, and both remaining buttons were responding, then handed it back.
He asked how much the dealer would have been. I told him to call and ask, but that whatever number they gave him, he'd have paid it after a tow and a wait measured in days, not minutes. He seemed to do the math quietly.
