The 2021 Golf at Esplanade Shopping Center had that telltale VW ignition feel: key goes in fine, turns halfway, then sticks like it's fighting you. Owner said it started a month back, getting worse each week.
I checked the mechanical key first. HU66 profile, normal wear on the blade. But when I scoped the ignition cylinder, wafer 3 and 5 were hanging up. Classic VW issue. The 2021 still uses the same basic HU66 lock that's been failing since the Mk5 days.
Decoded the cylinder right there in the parking lot. Swapped the worn wafers, cleaned the housing, tested the spring tension. While I had it apart, I cut a fresh key to match the repaired cylinder. No point putting a worn key back into fresh wafers.
The BCM2 accepted the transponder adaptation through ODIS without drama. Component protection stayed happy since I wasn't swapping the whole cylinder. Key slides in smooth now, turns like butter.
The owner mentioned his neighbor just paid the dealer for a complete ignition assembly on their Atlas. Same exact wafer problem, but the dealer sold them the whole unit instead of fixing what was broken. Different approach, different result.
