Then synced the four-button remote. His Golf's immobilizer light on the dash did its little flicker, settled, and the engine turned over clean.
Lock decode to engine running, about 45 minutes. He drove out of that lot the same day he hiked in. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a weekday appointment, and a bill that makes people wince. He paid a fraction of that and never left his parking spot.
