2016 Volkswagen Golf
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2016 Volkswagen Golf Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A nurse in Victoria Estates, Oxnard, had just bought her first car off a private seller. A 2016 Volkswagen Golf, good shape, fair deal, one key. The seller promised the second one was at home somewhere. That was three weeks before she called me.

She had already checked with the Volkswagen dealer by then. The number they quoted her was enough to make her put it off, and then she started noticing the flip key she had was getting stiff. The blade hinge felt loose and the remote was acting spotty from more than a few feet away. She did not want to find out what it would cost if that single key stopped working completely.

I met her in the parking area near her building. She handed me the original while I set up on the hood of my van. The hinge issue turned out to be a worn pivot pin, which is common on these flip keys after a few years of use. I went through the remote housing while I was in there anyway, cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and got the remote range back to where it should be on the original.

Then I cut the spare blade, read the vehicle data through the OBD port, and walked through the programming sequence to register the new key to the car. That part takes a few minutes. When it was done I tested all four buttons on both keys, ran the ignition on both, and confirmed the remote functions were working at normal distance.

She had a spare, her original was repaired, and the whole thing happened in her parking lot. The dealer comparison came up naturally when she mentioned what they had quoted. She said she saved a good chunk, which is usually how that conversation goes.
