A retail manager called me from a shopping center lot in Ventura, over near the Juanamaria neighborhood, a little before 10pm. Her only key to her 2004 Golf was gone. Lost somewhere during her shift. She was already looking up tow trucks.
I asked her to breathe for a second and find her VIN. She did not know what that was. I told her to look through the windshield, driver's side, bottom of the glass. She read it back to me. That 17-digit string told me everything: Mk4 Golf, Immo3, ID48 transponder, HU66 keyway.
I prepped a blank 1J0959753AM shell and an ID48 chip before I even left. On the Mk4 platform, all-keys-lost means pulling the SKC (secret key code) from the instrument cluster. The cluster on these is a VDO unit, and the code extraction goes through the diagnostic port, no dash disassembly needed.
Under the lot lights, I cut the HU66 blade, seated the ID48 chip, and married it to her Immo3 module using my VVDI. Programmed all four remote buttons. Tested the lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. Then started the car twice to make sure the immobilizer handshake was solid and that yellow key warning stayed off.
She drove home that night. A VW dealer would have meant a tow, a wait until morning, and a bill for a lot more. The VIN is the single most helpful thing you can give me when you call.
