1997 Honda Odyssey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to me in Lakeside or Winter Gardens?

Usually within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where I am when you reach me. You drop a GPS pin, I come to the car. Driveway, parking lot, wherever it's sitting.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today?

Yes. The 1997 Odyssey uses key blanks that I carry on the van, so there's no ordering wait. Dealers sometimes have to source older stock, and a week-long wait for parts on a mid-90s Honda isn't unheard of on forums. Same-day is the standard here, not something you have to ask for.

Q: My fob stopped working after I replaced the battery. What's going on?

This comes up a lot with these older Honda remotes. A couple of things can cause it. First, double-check that the CR2025 is seated flat and the contacts aren't bent from being pried open. Even a slight tilt kills the connection. Second, and this is the one people miss: on some of these late-90s Honda fobs, opening the case and removing the battery can cause the remote to lose its pairing to the vehicle.

Q: I have a spare fob I bought online. Can I program it to my 1997 Odyssey myself?

Possibly, yes. This generation of Honda has an onboard remote programming sequence that doesn't require a diagnostic tool. The procedure uses the ignition and door lock controls to put the system into pairing mode. It works for adding a remote when you already have access to the vehicle and a working key. One thing to confirm first: the replacement fob needs to match the factory FCC ID on your original fob.

1997 Honda Odyssey Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A trail runner out near Winter Gardens lost his key somewhere on the trail. Not the fob. The actual ignition key. The fob was clipped to his pack and came back fine, but without the metal key, the Odyssey wasn't moving.

He was in a dirt lot, no dealer nearby, and a tow would've been an ordeal just to get a flatbed in there. He texted me his GPS pin.

I drove out with what I needed already in the van. Decoded the lock on-site, cut a replacement key to the vehicle right there in the lot. No tow, no waiting on a dealer to pull inventory or schedule a tech. The Odyssey started in the same spot it had been sitting all morning.

He re-paired the fob himself before I left, walked him through the onboard sequence since this generation supports it. Both pieces working, good to go.

The dealer conversation never really came up. He just wanted to get back to his car, and we handled it where the car was.

Honda Odyssey Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 1997 Honda Odyssey key replacement take?▼

For a standard replacement where you have at least one working key, figure 20 to 30 minutes. That covers decoding or code-cutting the key blade and testing the ignition. If the remote also needs to be re-paired, that adds a few minutes but it's a quick onboard sequence on this year, no diagnostic port needed.
