I was parked near the shops in Del Mar Village when the call came in. A guy at a muffler shop on the edge of town had been waiting for about forty minutes. Another locksmith had started a key programming job on his 2008 Odyssey, the car battery sagged mid-sequence, and the immobilizer went into a fault state. The other locksmith packed up and left.
That last part always gets me. You don't leave a customer's van dead in a parking lot because the job got harder.
When I pulled up, the Odyssey wouldn't acknowledge the new key at all. The dash was showing a key warning and the engine wouldn't turn over. I walked every button and verified the engine start before I unhooked anything.
The whole job ran about an hour and a half, longer than a clean first-time program, but that's the recovery tax. He paid a fraction of what a dealer would have charged for the same result, plus he didn't need a flatbed. The muffler shop guys watched the whole thing. I left them with one piece of advice: if anyone ever does key work on that van again, hook up a jump pack before they start.
