Over in Carmel Valley, a guy who stocked shelves at a warehouse store called me about his 2020 Odyssey. A different locksmith had made him a replacement key a little over a week before, and it had already started failing.

I programmed a new key properly, matched to his vehicle, and swapped in a fresh battery before closing it back up. He watched the whole thing from a folding chair he pulled out of the van's back row.

He saved a solid chunk compared to what the dealer quoted him, and the key has been working without issues since. The difference between a key that lasts and one that doesn't is usually what happens inside the fob before you ever touch the start button.
