2017 Honda Odyssey
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2017 Odyssey uses a smart fob -- it communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer wirelessly. The van is constantly checking for an authorized signal. No valid signal, no start. It is a different setup from older transponder keys where you physically insert something into the ignition. The fob also handles your remote functions through its buttons.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2017 Honda Odyssey smart key?

Professional immobilizer tools connected through the OBD-II port. The process involves initiating a security handshake with the vehicle's immobilizer, running the Honda key registration sequence, and verifying that all enrolled fobs are confirmed before closing out. We also confirm remote functions and, where applicable, re-link the driver memory profile to the new fob. One thing worth knowing: the 2017 Odyssey immobilizer is not forgiving of incomplete procedures.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I bring it to you to program, or do I have to buy the fob from you?

You can bring your own fob. Happens regularly. Just know that fobs sold online vary in quality, and if a unit arrives with a defective transponder board, no amount of programming will make it work. We will tell you on the spot if that is what we are dealing with. The other thing to check before you order: the fob has to match your exact vehicle.

Q: All my keys were lost or stolen. Can you still make a key for my 2017 Odyssey, or does it have to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on a 2017 Odyssey is a job we do on site. It does not have to go to the dealer. The process involves clearing the existing key registrations from the immobilizer and enrolling new fobs from scratch. Any lost or stolen fobs get erased in the process -- they will not be able to start the van afterward. We also cut a new key blade and confirm the emergency insert works in the door cylinder.

2017 Honda Odyssey Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A college student off North Broadway in Escondido called me on a Monday morning. He had a storage unit, a U-Haul reserved for Wednesday, and zero working keys to his 2017 Odyssey. He had already called the dealer. They told him Thursday at the earliest, and that was before factoring in whether they had the key in stock.

He was mid-move. Wednesday was not flexible. The truck reservation was not flexible. Three days without the van meant the whole plan fell apart.

I was at the storage facility that same afternoon. He was standing in the parking lot next to a half-loaded unit, genuinely unsure how he was going to make any of it work.

I connected to the OBD port, ran the Honda security access sequence through the immobilizer, and enrolled the new fob on site. Cut the key blade to his vehicle, tested lock and unlock on every door, confirmed the engine started, and walked through the memory seat re-link so his profile would follow the fob. The whole job was done before he finished taping his last box.

Monday call, Monday fix. He made his Wednesday move. The dealer never came up again after I pulled out of the lot.

Honda Odyssey Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things to check before you let anyone touch your van. First, ask for a firm price over the phone for a 2017 Honda Odyssey smart key replacement. A real shop knows what the job involves and can give you a number. If they dodge it or say they have to see the car first just to quote you, that is a flag. Second, look at what pulls up.
