I got a call from a guy parked at a small food lot near Del Mar Heights. He was setting up for the morning shift and his key blade had snapped. Half was in his hand, the other half was in the ignition cylinder. The van was off but he was afraid to try anything because he could hear something still ticking over. When I got there the broken piece was seated far enough in that you could not grab it by hand. I used a pick tool to work it out without disturbing the wafers inside the cylinder. That part matters. Once the piece was out clean, I decoded the lock and cut a fresh blade from the readings. The 2014 Odyssey in this configuration runs a separate remote fob for the keyless functions, so the fob itself was untouched and still working fine. I only needed to cut a new blade and run the transponder enrollment so the immobilizer would accept it. One registration cycle and the van started clean.
He was rolling again in under an hour from the time he called. A snapped key in a food lot parking lot feels like the whole day is wrecked. On this generation Odyssey it is one of the cleaner jobs I do. The dealer route would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have made his eyes water.
