Downtown IB is mostly foot traffic and salt air. I parked on a side street off Palm Avenue, close enough to walk to the water if I had time, which I never do.
The guy I was there for had a 2019 Odyssey he'd been driving for a couple years. He found me on YouTube watching a Honda key job, saved my number, and when his fob started acting up he already knew roughly what the process looked like. That part makes the job easier. No convincing anyone, no explaining why the dealer isn't the only option.
His complaint was range. The fob still worked, but you had to be practically touching the door handle before it registered. The power sliding doors were the most obvious symptom because you'd tap the button and nothing would happen, then five feet closer and it would finally respond. He figured it was the battery.
It wasn't the battery. Battery was fine. The issue was a slightly corroded contact inside the fob, the kind of thing that builds up gradually and just quietly degrades your signal over a couple of years near the coast. Salt air does that faster than inland.
I cleaned the contacts, reseated everything, and verified the CR2032 was actually putting out the right voltage under load, not just sitting there looking okay. Then I walked every function: both sliding door buttons, the liftgate, lock, unlock, panic, remote start. Range test from across the parking lot. Everything came back the way it should.
He didn't need a full replacement. He needed someone to actually look at the fob instead of just selling him something new. I did have a replacement in the bag if the internals were too far gone, but they weren't. Thirty minutes, done on site, and he kept the original fob. The dealer quote he'd already gotten was for a full replacement plus programming. He saved a good chunk just by calling a tech instead of making an appointment.
