Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Honda vehicles?

We use OEM-spec keys that match the factory FCC ID, transponder chip, and blade profile for the specific vehicle. On the 2007 Odyssey in particular, I'm careful about this. The remote head key on this generation has to pair correctly with the immobilizer, and cheap aftermarket units have inconsistent chip quality that can cause intermittent no-start issues even after a successful initial programming. Honda owner forums are full of threads from people who bought a low-cost replacement online, had it programmed, and then had it stop communicating with the car a few months later. The shell quality on budget units also tends to fail faster at that blade-to-housing joint, which is already the known weak point on this key design. I carry keys I've tested on these vehicles and trust for the long run.

How long will a replacement key last?

Years, under normal use. The transponder chip inside a well-made remote head key is durable and typically outlasts the vehicle itself. What wears out first on the 2007 Odyssey key is almost always the housing: the plastic cracks at the key-ring loop, the rubber buttons wear through, or the blade gets loose at the neck from daily stress. When that happens, the internal electronics can often be moved into a new housing without any reprogramming, since the chip stays intact. Change the CR1616 battery every couple of years and don't use the key ring hole as a stress point, and the electronics side should give you no trouble.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. I come back. Every key I make is covered under warranty. If it stops starting the car, loses remote function, or develops any issue under normal use, I fix or replace it, no runaround.

The dealer path has more friction there. If they determine a third-party tool or non-OEM part was involved at any point, they can and do push back on warranty coverage for related electrical complaints. I don't operate that way. You have a problem with something I made, I make it right.

Question 4

My Odyssey starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the key stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2007 Odyssey remote head key, the transponder that starts the car and the remote that operates the locks are in the same unit but they function independently. So it's possible for the ignition side to work perfectly while the remote side has failed, and vice versa.

First thing to check is the CR1616 battery. This battery is thinner than most people expect and it's easy to seat it slightly off-center, which gives you weak or no signal even with a fresh cell. Pull the battery, clean the contacts, and reseat it squarely. If range comes back but fades again quickly, the battery itself may be low even if it's new, since some aftermarket CR1616 cells have inconsistent capacity.

If a fresh correctly seated battery doesn't bring the remote back, the issue is likely in the remote circuitry inside the housing. At that point you're looking at a replacement key unit rather than a repair. The ignition and transponder function can be preserved during that process if the chip is still reading correctly.

Can I program a second key for my 2007 Odyssey myself, or do I need a professional?

This generation of Honda Odyssey has an onboard add-a-key procedure that works if you already have two working programmed keys in hand. If you have two, you can register a third through an ignition-turn sequence without any external equipment. But most people calling about a replacement are either down to one key or zero, and that changes things.

With only one key remaining, you need a tool to register the new one. No ignition trick covers that situation on this vehicle. All-keys-lost is a similar story, handled on site with the right equipment but not something you can do in your driveway with a YouTube video.
