I got a call from a muffler shop in Downtown El Cajon. Not the kind of call I expect from a muffler shop.
A customer had brought his 2015 Odyssey in for exhaust work, and while it was sitting in the lot, another locksmith had attempted a smart key replacement on it. Somewhere mid-programming, the van's battery dropped voltage. The immobilizer module hit a fault state and locked up. The other locksmith decided that was the dealer's problem and left. The muffler shop guys were now babysitting a minivan that wouldn't start and an owner who was not happy.
I brought my jump pack and my diagnostic setup. Before I touched anything related to the key, I stabilized battery voltage. That step alone is what a lot of people skip, and it's exactly why jobs like this go sideways. Once the supply was steady, I cleared the fault state from the immobilizer through the OBD port and let the module reset cleanly. After that, the programming sequence ran without a fight. New fob learned on the first try.
The whole job took close to an hour and a half, which is longer than a standard smart key replacement on these. The fault recovery adds time. But it got done that afternoon, in the parking lot, without a flatbed.
The muffler shop owner asked me to walk his guys through what caused it. I showed them the voltage drop scenario and told them to remind customers to hook up a jump pack or a battery maintainer before any locksmith starts a programming sequence on an older van. They seemed genuinely interested. Good guys over there.
