An architect in the Mandalay Village Marketplace area of Oxnard called me from a parking garage. Her 1998 A4 had one key left and it stopped starting the car that morning. Cranked fine, just wouldn't catch. The immobilizer light on the cluster stayed solid instead of blinking off.

I drove in, parked one level up, and walked down with my bag. Pulled her old HU66 key apart and the Megamos ID48 glass capsule had a hairline crack. The transponder was intermittent, which is why it had been working some mornings and not others for the past week.
I read the SKC PIN from the instrument cluster through the OBD port using my VVDI2 in VAG login mode. Cut a fresh HU66 blank on the machine in my van, seated a new ID48 chip, and programmed it to her Immo2 system right there on the lower level. Tested it three times cold. Fired every time.
Her car never left that parking spot. The whole job took about 35 minutes and cost a fraction of what the dealer quoted, and that quote assumed she could even get the car to them.
