1998 Audi A4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does it take once you arrive?

For a mechanical key on a 1998 A4, once I am at the car it typically runs 20 to 30 minutes start to finish. That covers decoding the lock or reading the existing key if you have one, cutting the replacement, and testing it in every lock on the car. No waiting on a module handshake, no timed countdown. Cut, test, done.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

By a lot. Dealers on these older Audis tend to treat it like a parts-order job. They check stock, they schedule, they call you back. Owners on forums describe waiting multiple days just to get a straight answer on availability. I carry blanks for the B5 A4 on the van and cut on-site the same visit. There is no reason to wait days for a mechanical key.

Q: My key turns but feels like it is going to get stuck. Should I be worried?

Yes, take it seriously. The ignition cylinders on the B5 A4 are known to wear over time, and a key that feels gritty or catches is giving you a warning before it either breaks off or stops turning altogether. A few things can be happening: the cylinder itself is worn, the key blade is worn and no longer engaging the tumblers cleanly, or both.

Q: I only have one key for my 1998 A4. Is it worth getting a spare cut?

One hundred percent worth it. The B5 A4 is old enough that replacement parts are not always sitting on a shelf somewhere, and a locksmith decoding a lock from scratch on a car this age takes more time than copying a key you already have in hand. Get the spare cut while the original is still in good shape. It is the cheapest insurance on the whole car.

1998 Audi A4 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in Windsor North called me on a Saturday morning. She had parked in the lower level of a parking structure off the River Ridge side and her key snapped off in the door lock. Not in the ignition, in the door. Half the blade was still in the cylinder.

She had already called the dealer. They were open Saturday but their service department could not see her until Monday, and the key would need to be ordered. She was standing next to her car with a broken key and a full weekend ahead of her.

I drove to her, walked in with my extraction tools and my cutting machine, and pulled the broken blade out of the door cylinder without damaging it. I decoded the lock right there, cut a replacement key to match, and tested it in both the door and the ignition before I packed anything up.

The whole thing took about 25 minutes. She made a comment about the dealer's Monday appointment and I just nodded. She was already driving out of the garage by the time I got back to my van.

Audi A4 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need an Audi key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Audi dealer service departments run limited Saturday hours and nothing on Sunday. If you lose or break your key on a Friday night, you are looking at Monday at the earliest, and that assumes they have the blank in stock and an open slot. For a 1998 A4, this is a mechanical key job. There is no module to access remotely, no parts to order from a distributor. We cut on-site. Nights, weekends, same response either way.
