Got a call from a vet tech near El Capitan State Beach in Santa Barbara. She had a 2001 A4 with a key another locksmith made that worked great for about a week, then started failing. Mornings it would fire right up. By evening the engine would crank, catch for a second, and die. Classic Immobilizer III rejection pattern.
She thought the car had an antenna problem around the ignition barrel. Reasonable guess, wrong diagnosis.
I pulled her flip key apart on my mobile bench. The previous locksmith had used a generic ID48 clone that was close to the Megamos crypto spec but not matched correctly to her specific immobilizer module. On Audi's Immo III, a sloppy clone can pass the initial handshake but fail the rolling verification the ECU runs over multiple drive cycles. The car gets pickier, not less.
I read the SKC from her instrument cluster using my VVDI2, pulled the correct crypto data, and programmed a fresh ID48 chip matched to her specific immobilizer. Her 4D0837231P shell was fine, so I reused it with the new transponder and a fresh CR2032 since the old battery was reading low, which was making the remote range flaky on top of everything else.
Started first turn. Remote locked and unlocked from across the lot. She watched the dash like she was waiting for it to quit again. It did not.
