I got a call from a European auto specialist shop in Midtown Ventura, not a panic call exactly, but close. A previous locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost job on a customer's 2015 A4 and something went sideways mid-process. The immobilizer module read had failed partway through, and now the car would not accept any key at all. The shop's own tech could not get the security system to respond over OBD. The customer was sitting there waiting.
The problem with a failed mid-read on one of these is that the module can lock into a state where it refuses communication entirely. It is not a dead module, it is a protected module. Brute-forcing another OBD attempt does not help. You have to go deeper.
I drove out with my bench setup. Pulled the module, read the EEPROM data directly off the chip, sent it through a calculation service, got the file back, generated fresh key data, reinstalled the module, and finished the enrollment through OBD. The whole recovery took about two hours, which is longer than a standard new-key job on a healthy car.
The customer asked what the alternative would have been. Realistically: towing to the dealer, waiting for their schedule, and paying a significantly higher bill with no guarantee of same-day turnaround. He left that afternoon with a working key and a car that started.
The shop called me again three weeks later on a different vehicle. That is the outcome I care about.
