Yes. Broken key extraction on the 1999 A4 is a hands-on job but very manageable. The ignition cylinder on these older Audis is a traditional turn-key setup, which means there's no push-button complication to work around. The goal is always to pull the broken piece without damaging the cylinder itself. If the cylinder is already worn or got forced, sometimes a pin or wafer inside needs attention before a new key will turn cleanly. Once the broken piece is out, I cut a replacement blade to your vehicle and program the chip on site. You leave with a working key, not a car that needs a tow.

The battery powering the remote side is a CR2032. The chip side draws power from the car's antenna ring around the ignition, so it works even when the remote battery is completely dead. When the plastic housing cracks or the flip pivot wears out, a lot of owners transfer the internals into a fresh shell rather than replacing everything. That works, but the chip has to be seated correctly in the new housing or you'll get a no-start even though the key looks fine.

If neither of those works, the fault could be in the key itself, the antenna ring, or somewhere in the vehicle's security electronics. One thing that trips people up on late-1990s Audis is that a battery disconnect or a dead vehicle battery can sometimes cause the immobilizer to lose sync. That's a diagnostic conversation, not a parts-swap, and it's worth having before you buy a new key.

The flip mechanism on my key is broken but the key still starts the car. Do I need a full replacement or just a new shell?

The catch is that swapping shells has to be done carefully. The chip and the remote circuit board both need to move over correctly and seat without bending any contacts. If something shifts during the transfer, you can end up with a car that won't start even though nothing was wrong with the chip before you touched it. I've seen it happen when owners try the transfer themselves with a housing they ordered online.

If you want to go that route, it's worth having it done by someone who can verify the programming held after the swap rather than finding out in a parking lot.
