A woman near the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in Santa Barbara had a 2008 Audi A4 and one question: is an aftermarket key going to work the same as the original?
Fair question. She wanted a daily-use spare, not a drawer backup. So I walked her through it right there in the parking area.
Her original was the standard B7 flip key, part number 8P0 837 220 E, four buttons, HU66 blade, Megamos 48 CAN chip inside. The aftermarket blank I carry uses the same chip type, same blade profile, same circuit board layout for the 315 MHz remote. I used my HU66 Lishi to decode her driver door, cut the blade on my mobile machine, then ran the transponder programming through OBD using the instrument cluster's immobilizer login.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes. She flipped the blade out, looked at both keys side by side, and started testing. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then she put it in the ignition. Started clean on the first turn.
The only visible difference is no four-ring logo on the back of the housing. Functionally, the key does exactly the same job. Same button feel, same snap-together fit, same blade spec.
She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a wait time measured in days and a price that made a spare key feel like a luxury. Mine was a fraction of that, done on site, while she waited.
