If holding it against the cylinder still gets no response, the problem is either the transponder chip inside the key or something on the vehicle side. At that point I connect diagnostics and read whether the immobilizer is seeing any key at all. Sometimes it's the key. Sometimes it's a module that lost its pairing after a battery disconnect. That said, if the housing has cracked badly enough to damage the circuit board or the chip, then a full replacement and registration is the job.
