A call came in from Hope Ranch, Santa Barbara. Owner of a 2010 A4, parked in her driveway, push-to-start refusing to see the fob. She'd already been to another locksmith. Key was cut, key was programmed, everything looked fine for about a week. Then the car started playing games. Start the car in the morning, no problem. On this generation of Audi, the system will accept a close-enough key on initial registration and fire the car up fine. Then it runs deeper verification over the next several drive cycles. By day five or six, it had made up its mind and started rejecting the key intermittently, which is worse than a flat-out rejection because it makes you think the car has an antenna issue.
I pulled the fob open right there on the hood. The CR2032 was also borderline. Not dead, just soft enough that combined with the data mismatch, the system was getting inconsistent signals from the fob.
Programmed a fresh key with the correct data matched to her vehicle, confirmed every button function, walked both door handles, and ran the start sequence twice. No drama.
