A vet tech at a dog grooming spot near Old Mission Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara called me about her 2010 A4. Another locksmith had made her a key about a week earlier. It worked fine each morning but by evening the push-to-start would sit there with "key not detected" on the dash. She figured the car had a bad antenna.
I pulled her fob apart on the hood of the car. The previous guy had used a generic 48-series chip that was close to the Megamos crypto spec but not matched to the right generation. On the BCM2 system in these B8 A4s, a close-but-wrong chip can pass the first handshake during programming and even start the car for a few drive cycles. Then the deeper rolling verification catches it and the immobilizer kills fuel injection about two seconds after crank.
I read the old chip with my VVDI2, confirmed the data was off, and programmed a fresh key with the correct Megamos generation matched to her 8T0959754G fob. Her CR2032 was also low, which was making the intermittent detection worse on top of the chip mismatch.
New key has been solid since. The difference between a key that works and one that works for a week comes down to chip accuracy on these Audis.
