Got a call from someone near Arroyo Burro Beach in Santa Barbara on a Sunday. Flight attendant on a layover, killing time at one of the brunch spots. She already sounded tired of explaining it.
Another locksmith had cut and programmed a key for her 2007 Audi A4 the day before. The car would crank, fire for about two seconds, then the immobilizer killed the fuel. Classic incomplete IMMO learn. The other tech told her the body control module was bad and left.
The module was fine. What happened is the previous guy never finished the Megamos 48 transponder registration. Audi's IMMO system on these B7s requires a PIN-based security handshake with timed steps through the instrument cluster. Rush it or pick the wrong IMMO generation in the software and the key data writes to temporary memory but never commits. The car sees the key just long enough to crank, then rejects it.
I connected my IM608 through OBD, cleared out the half-written key data from the failed attempt, pulled a fresh security PIN from the immobilizer module, and ran a clean registration with the correct timer sequence. Her NBG009272T fob came back with all four buttons working and a solid start. No two-second cutoff.
She had already paid one locksmith for a job that was never finished. I could not fix that part. What I could do was make sure the key actually worked when I drove away.
