I was already in South Winds in Oxnard when a Friday night call came in. Couple came out of dinner around 9pm to a 2012 Audi A4 that wasn't responding to either key fob press. Nothing. No flash from the lights, no click from the locks.
They'd tried the obvious. New battery in the fob, maybe two weeks before. Figured it couldn't be that.
When I got there, I checked the fob first before touching anything else. The CR2032 was seated but one of the battery contacts had a slight outward bow, probably from a hard pry when the battery was swapped. Just enough to break the connection intermittently. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery, and tested range from about 30 feet. Locked and unlocked clean.
Then I walked the car. Comfort access on the driver door handle, passenger side, start button response, every button on the fob. Everything came back normal.
No programming. No new key. Just a contact fix on a fob that had been mishandled slightly during a battery change.
They were back on the road in under 20 minutes. The dealer would've had them waiting until Monday and quoting a full key replacement. When you carry the right tools and blanks for jobs that do need more, you also know fast when a job needs less.
