A guy found me through YouTube, recognized the diagnostic setup from a GM video I posted, and had my number ready when his 2008 Enclave started giving him trouble. He was parked near the kennel lot off Hobson Park in Oxnard, and he called me before he even tried the dealer.
The symptom was intermittent: sometimes the car started fine, other times it cranked and cranked without catching. No consistent pattern, which is the frustrating kind. When it gets intermittent like that on a transponder system this age, the first thing I check is the key itself. The transponder in the head can develop a crack in the housing or a weak signal over years of use, especially on a daily driver key that has been on a heavy ring.
I pulled up, scanned through the OBD port, and confirmed the immobilizer was throwing a no-transponder-recognized condition intermittently. The cut on his original was also worn enough that I would have re-cut regardless.
New key cut to the vehicle. Programmed on site. Started it several times in a row to confirm the read was consistent, not just a one-time pass. He watched the whole thing from about ten feet away, same as he had watched the YouTube video before calling.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait and a number he did not like. I did not ask what the number was. He saved a good chunk either way.
