I got a call from a guy in the Las Positas area of Santa Barbara on a Saturday morning. He coached a youth soccer league, and his team had a game. He had no working key for his 2013 Buick Enclave and he was already frustrated before I pulled up, because he'd already paid another locksmith who left the job unfinished.
The story he told me: the other tech cut him a key, tried to program it, and the car would crank and then die after about two seconds. The tech told him the body control module was probably bad and that he needed a dealer. Then he left.
I've seen this before. That two-second crank-and-die is the theft-deterrent system shutting down fuel delivery because it doesn't recognize the key. It's not a dead module. It's a rejected key, usually because the programming sequence didn't complete correctly through the security access window.
I checked the mechanical cut first, running a decode on the ignition to confirm what the correct cut should be. The blade on the key the other tech left was off on a couple of depths. Small error, but enough to matter. Then I connected to the OBD port, cleared the faulted entry from the previous attempt, got into security access, and ran the transponder relearn clean. The whole sequence has a built-in timed step and you just have to let it run.
Key went in. Engine started and stayed running. No warning light, no cutoff.
He made his game. The dealer never came up until he asked what they would have charged, and when I told him it would have been a lot more plus a tow, he just shook his head.
