Friday evening near Stagecoach Inn Museum in Thousand Oaks, a couple walked out of a wine bar to a 2010 Buick LaCrosse that wouldn't do anything. Dead fob. Neither of them knew about the backup start procedure where you hold the dead key fob against the start button to let the RFID couple through at close range. They figured the car was done until Monday when a dealer could look at it.
I was about 15 minutes out and already had the right blank loaded in my van. Their key was the 5-button remote flip, FCC ID OHT01060512, part number 13504202, running the HU100 side-milled blade with a PK3+ transponder chip inside.
Popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was completely flat, and one of the battery contact tabs had a slight green tint on it. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and reprogrammed the fob to the BCM through the OBD-II port. Push-to-start caught on the first press. Then I walked the locks, tested all five buttons including the trunk release and remote start, and confirmed the DIC stayed clean with no theft system messages.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes. They drove home that night instead of calling a cab and waiting out the weekend. A dealer would have meant a tow, a parts order, and days of waiting for way more money.
