2012 Buick Lacrosse
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I don't have my old fob. How do you know which replacement key my LaCrosse needs?

The factory FCC ID stamped on your original fob is one way to confirm fitment, but it's not the only way. Year, make, model, and a quick look at the vehicle are enough to identify the correct flip key for your car. You don't need to have the original fob in hand. That's kind of the whole point of a lost key call.

Q: I lost every key to my 2012 LaCrosse. Can you still make one?

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls I get. All-keys-lost on these is a standard job. I come to the vehicle, decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code through the OBD port, cut a new blade to fit, and then program the new fob so the immobilizer accepts it. The car doesn't care that the old keys are gone. Once the new key is enrolled, you're set.

Q: The blade on my flip key snapped off inside the door lock. Now what?

Broken blades in the lock cylinder happen more than you'd think, especially on a flip key that's been flexed thousands of times at the hinge. The blade gets fatigued right at the pivot point and eventually it shears. Two problems to solve: extract the broken piece from the cylinder, then replace the fob. Extraction depends on how deep the piece went and whether it's gripping the tumblers.

Q: My 2012 LaCrosse starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Is the fob bad or is it the car?

Start with the CR2032. A battery that still has enough voltage to wake the immobilizer and allow starting can be too weak to reliably reach the receiver for remote functions. Remote entry typically needs more transmit power than the ignition circuit does, so a dying battery often kills the remote side first while the car still starts normally. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, test range right at the door versus from across the parking lot.

2012 Buick Lacrosse Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the dog park off Conejo School Road, the one where the Casa Conejo neighborhood spills into the open space, when a guy jogged over and asked if I did Buicks. His 2012 LaCrosse was in the lot.

He'd had the flip key for years, used it every single day, and somewhere in the last week two of the five buttons had gone soft. Not dead, just soft. He'd click lock three times before it caught.

The blade itself was fine. He hadn't lost the key, hadn't broken it, just worn it down from normal use. That's actually the most common flip key story I hear.

I pulled the fob apart on the tailgate of my van. The CR2032 still had decent voltage but the contacts had a faint film on them. Cleaned those. The bigger issue was the rubber button pad underneath the top case. On these flip fobs the pad sits between the circuit board and the outer buttons, and after enough years the pad loses its spring. The buttons weren't making clean contact with the board.

New fob body, transferred the board, fresh battery, snapped it together. Then I did the part he said surprised him: I spent a full five minutes testing before I called it done. Walked away from the car, tested range. Walked back, tested each of the five buttons individually. Three ignition cycles. Everything confirmed.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out. He already knew it was more. That part was just an afterthought by then.

Buick Lacrosse Mobile Service FAQ

What battery does the 2012 Buick LaCrosse key fob take?▼

CR2032. It's a common size, easy to find at any pharmacy or hardware store. When you replace it yourself, make sure the positive side faces the correct direction and the battery seats flush. A slightly cocked CR2032 will give you weak or intermittent button response that looks like a programming problem when it's just a seating issue. If I'm making you a replacement key, a fresh CR2032 goes in before I hand it over.
