I was parked near the dog park off Conejo School Road, the one where the Casa Conejo neighborhood spills into the open space, when a guy jogged over and asked if I did Buicks. His 2012 LaCrosse was in the lot. He'd had the flip key for years, used it every single day, and somewhere in the last week two of the five buttons had gone soft. Not dead, just soft. He'd click lock three times before it caught.
The blade itself was fine. He hadn't lost the key, hadn't broken it, just worn it down from normal use. That's actually the most common flip key story I hear.
I pulled the fob apart on the tailgate of my van. The CR2032 still had decent voltage but the contacts had a faint film on them. Cleaned those. The bigger issue was the rubber button pad underneath the top case. On these flip fobs the pad sits between the circuit board and the outer buttons, and after enough years the pad loses its spring. The buttons weren't making clean contact with the board.
New fob body, transferred the board, fresh battery, snapped it together. Then I did the part he said surprised him: I spent a full five minutes testing before I called it done. Walked away from the car, tested range. Walked back, tested each of the five buttons individually. Three ignition cycles. Everything confirmed.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out. He already knew it was more. That part was just an afterthought by then.
