A set designer working near California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks called me about his 2011 LaCrosse. Another locksmith had made him a key about a week earlier. It started fine the first few days, then started acting up.
The pattern was textbook. Cold start, no problem. Drive somewhere, shut it off, come back, and the theft-deterrent light would go solid on the dash. The engine would crank but not fire. He'd wait ten minutes, try again, and sometimes it would catch. Sometimes not.
I pulled up to his spot and connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port. Read the BCM key data and saw what I expected. The previous key had a transponder that passed the initial learn procedure but was failing the rolling verification that the Body Control Module runs on subsequent starts. The BCM on these second-gen LaCrosse sedans, part number range 13586259 and similar, is picky. A close-enough chip won't survive long term.
I programmed a new flip key with the correct Hitag2 transponder and cut the blade to match. While I had the fob apart, his CR2032 was reading low too, which explained the intermittent remote lock and unlock failures on top of everything else.
That was months ago. Still working. The dealer quoted him a wait of several days for parts plus the tow. I did it in his parking lot in under an hour for a fraction of what they wanted.
