1996 Cadillac Deville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: The dealer said I need to tow my DeVille in for a new key. Is that true?

Not for a mechanical key job. Dealers will sometimes tell you to tow a vehicle in because that's how their shop is set up, but there's nothing about cutting a key for a 1996 DeVille that requires a lift, a bay, or a scan tool. A locksmith can decode the lock or work from the key code and cut a replacement at your car, wherever it is. Towing adds cost before anyone even touches the key. Skip it.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I'll also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on the DeVille to confirm everything lines up before any cutting starts. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, just handled faster and without the trip.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff and grinds a little. Do I need a whole new cylinder?

Not necessarily. On a DeVille this age, stiffness and grinding usually point to worn wafer tumblers inside the cylinder. As the wafers wear, the key has to work harder to push past them, and that grinding feeling is metal-on-metal contact that should be a smooth lift. A lot of dealers and shops jump straight to quoting a full cylinder replacement, but in many cases the cylinder housing is fine and only the wafers need attention.

Q: Can I get a spare key made from my original, or does it have to be cut from the lock?

If your original key is in decent shape, duplicating it is the faster route. I can cut a copy right from it. If the original is worn, a copy of a worn key just gives you two keys that both work poorly. In that case, decoding the lock directly gives a cleaner result, cut to the actual specification of the cylinder rather than to whatever shape the old key has worn into. Either way, it's a same-day, on-site job.

1996 Cadillac Deville Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in La Colonia called me on a Tuesday afternoon. His 1996 DeVille had been giving him grief for a while, key sticking on the way out of the ignition every single time he parked.

He'd gotten into the habit of wrestling the steering wheel and nudging the shifter just to free it. That day it didn't budge at all. Car was parked in front of his house and he was done messing with it.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him he'd need a new ignition cylinder, new keys cut to match, and that the car would have to come in. The quote was enough to make him pause. He found me and figured he'd at least hear another opinion before booking a tow.

I got to him in La Colonia and looked at the cylinder and the park interlock together. The wafers inside were worn, and the interlock was sluggish, not quite releasing the cylinder the way it should. That combination is what turns a minor annoyance into a full lockout. I decoded the existing cuts so any new key would match, rebuilt the cylinder with fresh wafers, and freed up the interlock mechanism. Tested it a dozen times before I packed up.

He stood there pulling the key in and out like he was making sure it was real. No tow, no multi-day shop wait, no parts he didn't need. Just the actual problem, fixed at the curb.

Cadillac Deville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in La Colonia?▼

Yes. That's the whole point of a mobile service. Call me and I'll come to wherever the DeVille is sitting in La Colonia or anywhere else in Oxnard. I carry the blanks and the tools to decode your lock and cut a replacement key right there on site. You don't need a tow truck. You don't need to sit on hold with roadside assistance hoping someone shows up. I give you a real arrival window and I'm there.
