Got a call from a woman near McGrath State Beach in Oxnard. Her 1999 Cadillac Deville would not start. Cranked strong, fuel pump primed, but nothing. Then it would just sit there for a few minutes and refuse to crank at all. Classic VATS lockout cycle.

I checked the key first. B62 blank, resistor pellet in the blade. The pellet contacts were dark and slightly corroded but the key itself was original with about 150,000 miles of pocket wear on it. The resistance reading was drifting just enough to mismatch on cold mornings when the metal contracted slightly.
I cut a fresh B62 key to code, matched the correct pellet resistance value with my VATS interrogator, and tested cold reads on the new key five times in a row. Rock solid every pass. Then I cleaned the read contacts inside the ignition cylinder housing while I was there.
She sat in the driver's seat, turned the new key, and the Northstar lit off immediately. She just held the wheel for a second like she didn't trust it yet.
