I was parked on a street off Gonzales Road in Mar Vista when the call came in. A woman had driven her 2003 DeVille to run errands and when she came out of the last stop, the key turned but the car wouldn't stay running. It would catch for a second and then die. She tried it a few more times. Same result every time.
She wasn't wrong to think it was a fuel or mechanical issue. Most people do. But the pattern, cranks fine, fires briefly, then stalls, pointed straight at a transponder read failure. The chip in her key head was worn down from years on a heavy keyring, and the immobilizer was done trusting it.
I got to her in about twenty minutes. Decoded the key blade from her existing key, cut a new one to match, programmed the transponder to the vehicle on site. The whole job took under forty minutes including drive time on my end.
She had asked earlier in the call whether she should just have it towed to the dealer. I told her she could, but availability on a Monday afternoon was probably going to push her to later in the week, and they'd want the car there before they'd even look at it. She appreciated not having to make that decision.
