A paint shop over in the Channel Islands neighborhood in Oxnard called me about a 2001 Deville that wouldn't start after a respray. Another locksmith had already been out, tried to program a key, and left when the body control module threw an immobilizer fault. The car was just sitting there rejecting everything.
When I got there, the DIC was showing "THEFT SYSTEM" and the engine would crank all day but never catch. Classic PK3 lockout, but worse because the previous attempt had put the BCM into a fault state where it wouldn't accept new key registrations at all.
I pulled the BCM, which on the 2001 Deville is mounted behind the dash on the driver's side. Read the EEPROM with my ACDP bench tool, cleared the stored fault, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. The B99 transponder key paired on the first clean attempt after the module reset.
Then the part I don't skip: full start cycle, shut off, restart. Waited for the security light to confirm it stayed off. Walked the paint shop guys through what went wrong so they'd know to flag it for future customers.
The whole job ran about 90 minutes, which is longer than a normal Deville key. But the alternative was a flatbed to the dealer and a multi-day wait for a fraction of what they would have charged. I carry bench tools specifically for when the first approach hits a wall.
