A paint shop out in Nyeland Acres called me about a 2001 Cadillac DeVille that had been sitting since a respray. The owner had lost his key sometime during the whole process, and the shop needed it moved.
They had already called another locksmith. That locksmith showed up, tried to program a new key, got errors from the immobilizer module, and left without finishing. Now the car was rejecting everything and nobody knew what state the module was in.
I drove out with my bench tools because I had a feeling this was going to be one of those jobs where the first attempt made the second attempt harder. That's exactly what happened. The previous programming attempt had left the system in a fault state. The module wasn't going to accept a new key without being cleared first.
I pulled the relevant module, read the memory directly, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration from a clean state. Once I had the module back in and the system talking normally again, the new key programmed on the first try. Cut the blade to the car, tested it in the door and the ignition, done.
Total time was close to ninety minutes, which runs longer than a standard job. The paint shop owner asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him honestly that I didn't know the exact number, but that a flatbed tow plus a multi-day dealer wait plus their labor rate would have been a lot more than what he paid me. He just nodded.
That's why I carry bench tools. Not every job needs them. But when a previous attempt leaves the system locked up, you either have the right equipment or you're the second locksmith who also couldn't finish it.
