Got a call from a paint shop over in the Pierpont neighborhood in Ventura. They had a customer's 1995 Cadillac Seville STS sitting in the booth area, fresh respray, and it would not start. Another locksmith had already come out, tried something, and left when the car kept cranking but refusing to fire. The shop guys were nervous about it sitting there taking up space.
When I got there the first thing I checked was the ignition cylinder. The VATS contacts inside the lock were coated in overspray dust. Not a lot, just a fine film, but enough. The resistor pellet on the key blade had the same haze on it.
I cleaned the pellet on the original key, then cleaned the contacts inside the cylinder. The Seville uses the single-sided B62 key blank with GM's 10-cut sidebar system, so there is no transponder chip involved, just that resistance pellet and a mechanical cut. Tried the key. The SECURITY light on the dash cycled, the resistance reading passed, and the Northstar 4.6L turned over clean.
The whole job took about 20 minutes. The paint shop guys watched me clean a little metal pellet with contact cleaner and could not believe that was the entire problem. The previous locksmith probably hit the four-minute VATS lockout timer and assumed the system was fried.
No module pull needed. No bench work. Just knowing what the car actually wants to see.
