Got a call from a guy over in the Alta Mesa area of Santa Barbara. His 2004 Seville wouldn't crank. Key turned, dash lit up, starter did nothing. He said the THEFT SYSTEM message was sitting right there on the DIC and the security light was solid, not flashing.
He'd already tried the 10-minute relearn twice on his own. Sat in the car with the key at ON, waited for the light to cycle off, turned it off, repeated. Nothing changed. He was ready to have it towed.
I got to him in about 30 minutes. Pulled my Lishi GM Z keyway tool, decoded the sidebar, and checked the existing key. The transponder was reading fine on my tester, which told me the key itself was good. I connected through the OBD port and pulled codes. B2960, which is a loss of security data message from the body control module. The PK3 antenna ring around the ignition cylinder had a hairline crack and was reading intermittently.
Swapped the antenna ring, cleared the B2960, ran the relearn with his original key, and the Northstar fired right up. Cut and programmed a spare while I was there so he'd have a backup.
He thought he needed a whole new ignition and a tow to the dealer. It was a plastic ring and some seat time with a scan tool, done in his driveway for a fraction of what the dealership quoted him over the phone.
