1996 Cadillac Seville MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy in the Midtown neighborhood of Ventura. His 1996 Seville was cranking but refusing to start in his driveway. He said the SECURITY light on the dash was solid, not flashing, and the engine would just turn over and die after about two seconds.
Classic VATS behavior.
He told me he'd already waited the four-minute lockout cycle twice, turned the key on, sat there, turned it off, tried again. Nothing. He was about to have it towed to the dealer and figured he was looking at a new ignition cylinder.
I got to him in about 25 minutes. First thing I checked was the key blade. The resistor pellet was still there, but it was filthy. Years of pocket lint, hand oils, and wear had built up a layer of grime over the contacts. I cleaned the pellet and the two contact plates inside the lock cylinder with a quick pass of electrical contact cleaner and a lint-free wipe.
Tried the key. SECURITY light flickered and went out. Engine fired right up.
The whole job took maybe 15 minutes of actual hands-on time. I cut him a fresh B62-P spare with the matching resistance value so he'd have a backup that wouldn't leave him stranded. He just stood there staring at the running engine like he'd been lied to his whole life.
No tow. No ignition cylinder. No lost day at the dealer.
