1996 Cadillac Seville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a car this age?

A well-cut key on a 1996 Seville can last decades. The lock cylinders on these cars are durable, and a properly made key won't accelerate wear. The more common issue on a car this age is the lock cylinder itself showing wear from years of use, which can cause a correctly cut key to feel loose or stiff. If your replacement key works but feels different from what you remember, the cylinder may need attention rather than the key.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We stand behind the work. On a mechanical key, the most common post-service issue is a cut that's slightly off tolerance, which shows up as stiffness or binding in one lock but not another. It can also be a worn lock cylinder that a new key exposes. Either way, we come back and sort it out.

Q: I only have the door lock but not the ignition key anymore. Can you still make a key?

Yes. On a 1996 Seville, the door lock and ignition cylinder were typically cut to the same code from the factory. Decoding the door lock gives us what we need to cut a key that works the ignition too. If the door cylinder has seen a lot of wear, we may cross-reference using the VIN-based key code through GM records to verify. Either way, you don't need a working ignition key to get a replacement made.

Q: Can I get a spare made so I'm not stuck with one key again?

Absolutely, and it's the smartest thing you can do while I'm already on site. Once the original or replacement is in hand, cutting a spare takes a few minutes and costs very little relative to what an all-keys-lost call runs. On a 30-year-old car with a mechanical key, a spare in a drawer at home is cheap insurance.

1996 Cadillac Seville Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Tuesday morning from a woman in Midtown Ventura. Her 1996 Seville had been sitting in her driveway for two days. She'd broken her only key getting it out of the door lock and was down to a stub that wouldn't turn anything.

No spare. No second key. Just a busted original and a car she needed to get to a medical appointment.

I was at her place within half an hour. The remaining piece of the broken key was still in the door cylinder, so I extracted it first, then decoded the lock. Cut a new key on site, verified it in the door, verified it in the ignition. The car started on the first turn.

She asked if I needed to plug into anything or do any kind of programming. I told her no, this one is a straight mechanical key, the cut is everything. She seemed almost surprised it could be that simple.

The whole job was done before she needed to leave. The dealer had quoted her a day's wait just to look at it.

Cadillac Seville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 1996 Seville?▼

For a 1996 Seville, the key blank just needs to match the correct keyway and be cut accurately to your vehicle's code. There's no chip or electronics involved, so this is entirely about the physical key blank and the quality of the cut. We use blanks that fit correctly and cut them precisely.
