2002 Cadillac Seville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why can't I just copy it at a hardware store?

The 2002 Cadillac Seville uses a transponder key, which means there's a small chip inside the key head that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system at start-up. The ignition cylinder reads the blade mechanically, same as any key. But the immobilizer system also checks the chip signal. If the chip isn't there, or isn't programmed to that car, the engine won't stay running. A hardware store key duplicator copies the blade shape only.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2002 Cadillac Seville key?

For a 2002 Seville, the job usually comes down to a quality scan tool that supports early-2000s GM security systems and a decoder for reading the lock cylinder. I carry tools that handle GM platforms across that generation. For all-keys-lost situations, the scan tool is non-negotiable since the immobilizer needs to be accessed directly to register new keys from scratch.

Q: My 2002 Seville cranks but stalls right after starting. Could it be the key?

Yes, and this is one of the most common calls I get on early-2000s GM vehicles. The pattern is specific: engine cranks, fires up for a second or two, then dies. The dash may show a security-related warning. That sequence is the immobilizer doing its job. It means the system didn't get a valid transponder signal from the key during start-up. A few things cause it.

Q: Can I program a spare key myself on a 2002 Seville if I already have one working key?

On some early-2000s GM vehicles there is an onboard sequence that lets you add a key using an existing programmed key. Whether it works on your specific Seville depends on the configuration and what keys are already stored. It's worth knowing the option exists before you assume you need to pay for full diagnostic equipment just to add a spare. That said, if you've lost all keys, there's no shortcut. All-keys-lost requires a scan tool to get back in.

2002 Cadillac Seville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked off Hollister Avenue on the Westside. He'd been driving his 2002 Cadillac Seville and the key had started feeling loose in the ignition, like it was hunting for the right spot before the car would actually turn over. That morning it stopped finding it altogether. The car would crank, almost catch, then die. He knew better than to keep trying.

I met him there. The blade was worn down enough that the wafers in the ignition cylinder were reading it inconsistently. Some turns it would pass the mechanical test, others it wouldn't, and when the ignition cylinder isn't reading the blade cleanly, the transponder handshake gets interrupted too. You end up chasing what looks like an immobilizer problem when the real issue started with a tired piece of metal.

I decoded the lock from the door cylinder, which still had clean wafers and gave me an accurate read. Cut a new blade matched to that decode, then ran the onboard relearn with his original key still present in the process. One learn cycle. The Seville started on the first turn with the new key like nothing had happened.

He mentioned he'd called the dealer first. They wanted him towed in, quoted him a multi-day wait because their tech was booked, and the number they gave him made him pause. He called me instead. The whole job was done on the street in under an hour. He drove home on the Westside with a fresh key and a spare he didn't have before.

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for. If they won't give you a real estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that's a problem. A locksmith who works on early-2000s GM vehicles regularly can tell you right away what the job involves. If the opening quote is suspiciously low and they say they'll sort out the price once they arrive, walk away. That's a bait-and-switch pattern that shows up constantly in locksmith scam reports.
