Got a call from a guy in the Downtown area of Santa Barbara. He was parked off State Street and his 2002 Cadillac Seville would not start. Crank, catch for half a second, die. "THEFT SYSTEM" sitting right there on the driver information center. He had already tried the key six or seven times and ran the battery down doing it.
When I got there he was leaning on the fender with his phone out, reading forums telling him to do the 10-minute relearn. He had tried it twice. Did not work because his transponder chip was already failing intermittently.
I decoded the door lock with my GM39 Lishi. Wafers were still in decent shape for a 22-year-old car. Cut a fresh B99 blade, seated a new PK3+ transponder chip in the key head, and connected to the OBD-II port on the BCM to run the security learn procedure. The body control module on these is the 15821273, which handles all the theft deterrent communication. One ten-minute relearn cycle through the diagnostic tool and the new key was paired.
He sat in the driver seat and turned it. The Northstar fired and stayed running. He just kind of exhaled and stared at the gauges for a second like he was waiting for it to stall again.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes including the jump start for the battery he drained. The dealer quoted him two days and a tow. He drove home.
