Got a call from a nurse finishing an overnight shift, parked off Thousand Oaks Boulevard corridor. Her 1996 Concorde's remote had quit on her sometime during her shift. She was standing next to the car clicking the GQ43VT7T over and over, nothing happening. She thought the car was locked out entirely.
First thing I told her: the key still turns the ignition. The '96 Concorde has no transponder, no immobilizer. The mechanical key starts the car regardless of the remote. She didn't know that. Most people don't on these mid-90s Chryslers because every car they've driven since has had a chip key.
I drove out and popped the remote open on her hood. The CR2016 was original, which on a '96 means it had been dead for a long time. The battery contacts inside the GQ43VT7T housing had some green corrosion built up. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2016, and tested all three buttons: lock, unlock, panic. All responded on the first press.
Then I cut her a spare mechanical key right there from the car, because she'd been running on a single key for who knows how long. No programming needed since there's no chip to pair.
She kept saying she thought she'd need to get towed to a dealer. For a battery and some corrosion. That's the part that gets me. People assume the worst because newer cars trained them to.
