My key shell is cracked and falling apart. Do I need a whole new key programmed from scratch?

Not always. The part the immobilizer actually cares about is the transponder chip inside the head, not the plastic around it. If the chip is still intact and undamaged, that chip can be transferred into a new key shell and paired with a freshly cut blade. No reprogramming needed in that case because the chip already holds its enrollment.

Where it gets more involved is when the chip itself is cracked, corroded, or was broken in whatever snapped the shell. Then you're looking at a full cut and program. Either way, I carry what's needed on the van. Bring the pieces, even if it looks hopeless, and I'll tell you which situation you're actually in before any work starts.

What is a transponder key and why does the 2001 Chrysler Concorde use one?

A transponder key is a metal ignition key with a small electronic chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the immobilizer sends a signal to the chip and waits for the correct coded response. If the response matches what's stored in the system, the engine runs. If it doesn't, or if there's no chip at all, the engine cranks and dies within a second or two.

The 2001 Concorde has no remote, no fob, and no buttons. It is purely a turn-key setup. The chip is passive, meaning it runs off the signal from the car itself and needs no battery of its own.

A hardware store copy of your key will turn the ignition just fine. It will not start the car.

My Chrysler Concorde cranks but won't stay running. Could this be the transponder key?

That exact symptom, cranks fine then dies within one or two seconds, is the classic sign that the immobilizer did not recognize the key. It's the most specific thing the system does when it rejects a key or can't read the chip.

A few things cause it. A chip that's failing intermittently. A key that was cut but never properly programmed. A chip that got damaged from heat, a bad drop, or from someone drilling the head trying to get the chip out themselves. Sometimes the ignition antenna ring that reads the chip gets corroded or loosens over time on these older Chryslers, which makes an otherwise good key unreliable.

Before assuming the key is dead, I check the antenna first. If that's the weak link, a new key won't fix anything until the antenna issue is addressed.

Can I buy a replacement transponder key online and have it cut at a hardware store to save money?

You can buy the blank online. Hardware stores generally won't cut the blade on a transponder key head, but a locksmith can. The cut alone, though, gets you a key that turns the ignition and immediately kills the engine.

The chip still has to be programmed to your specific vehicle. That requires the right diagnostic equipment. So the online blank might save a few dollars on the part itself, but you still need a tech with tools to finish the job. Bring the blank when you call and I'll confirm it's the right one before we do anything.

I have one working key for my 2001 Concorde. Should I get a spare made now or wait until there's a problem?

Get the spare now. On a vehicle this age, the ignition cylinders wear over time, and so does the key itself. Owners of late-model Concordes frequently report that their one remaining key starts getting finicky before it quits entirely. When it finally fails completely, you're looking at an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more than a simple second-key add while you still have a working key to reference.

One working key on a 22-year-old car is a tow truck call waiting to happen.
