Got a call from a woman down in Lower Village, Montecito. Her 2000 Chrysler Concorde was sitting in the driveway and wouldn't start. Cranked fine, just no fire. She'd already had it towed home from a grocery run the day before.
She told me the dealer said bring it in, earliest slot was Thursday afternoon. This was Tuesday. She also said they warned her it could be the SKIM module and parts might need to be ordered on top of the visit.
I drove out that morning. Key was in her hand, looked original, worn down on the bow but otherwise intact. I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port and pulled the SKIM status. The module was active, had two keys registered. But when I read the transponder through the antenna, the PCF7935 chip was giving back a weak signal. Intermittent recognition. The plastic around the key head had a hairline crack right over the chip, and the chip had shifted just enough to drop signal strength at the SKIM antenna ring.
Cut a new Y160-PT blank, cloned the transponder data, and tested it three times cold. Fired every time. Then I tested her second key from the junk drawer, same thing, weak read. Did a second clone on another blank so she'd have a solid backup.
She stood in the driveway holding both new keys like she'd just gotten away with something. Whole thing took about 35 minutes. A fraction of what the dealer route would have cost her in time alone.
