Got a call from a guy near Westlake Plaza in Thousand Oaks. His 1997 Chrysler Concorde had been sitting in a parking lot for two days because he thought a dead remote meant the car would not start. Someone told him Chrysler keys had chips and without a working one the engine locks out.
Not on this car.
The second-gen LH platform Concorde from 1993 to 1997 does not have a transponder immobilizer. The ignition key is a standard Chrysler Y157 blank, no chip inside. The GQ43VT7T remote is a standalone unit that handles lock, unlock, and trunk, but it has nothing to do with starting the engine. He could have turned the key and driven home two days ago.
I drove out, turned his key in the ignition, and the 3.5L fired right up. He just sat there for a second, processing that.
Then I dealt with the actual problem. His remote was completely dead. Popped the case, found a corroded CR2016 that had been leaking. Cleaned the battery contacts on the board, dropped in a fresh CR2016, and re-synced the remote using the on-board programming sequence. Lock, unlock, trunk, all responding clean from 30 feet.
He lost two days over a battery that costs almost nothing. The fix took me about fifteen minutes on site, for way less than even the diagnostic fee at a dealer.
