1997 Chrysler Sebring
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1997 Chrysler Sebring use?

It's a metal key, edge-cut, no remote, no fob, no battery. You insert it into the ignition cylinder and turn it. That's the whole system. There's no button for lock or unlock on the key itself. If you want remote access you'd be looking at an aftermarket add-on, but the factory key that came with this car is purely mechanical.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a 1997 Sebring key replacement?

Longer than it should for what is a simple job. Dealers route key work through their service department, which means scheduling around their existing queue. For a mechanical key on a vehicle this age, the actual cutting takes minutes, but getting into a service bay at a busy dealer can take days. Some owners have reported being told to leave the vehicle and wait for a callback.

Q: My 1997 Sebring key turns hard and feels like it's going to stick. What causes that?

Usually one of three things: a worn key blade, a worn ignition wafer, or debris in the cylinder. On a vehicle this age, the ignition cylinder has had decades of use and the internal wafers can wear unevenly. A key that's been copied too many times can also drift from the original cut, and each generation of copy compounds the wear on the cylinder. If the key is turning hard but still functioning, don't wait until it stops.

Q: I found a key blank at a hardware store. Can I just get it cut there?

Maybe, but the cut still has to be right. A hardware store can duplicate a key you hand them, but if the key you're handing them is already worn, the copy inherits those same wear patterns and you end up with a key that works poorly from day one. They also can't decode your lock or pull a key code if you've lost your only key entirely.

1997 Chrysler Sebring Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from the J Street Corridor on a weekday afternoon. A couple had locked their only key inside their 1997 Sebring and were stuck in the parking lot of their apartment complex. They'd already called the Chrysler dealer, who told them to arrange a tow and schedule an appointment. The dealer couldn't tell them when a tech would be available. That was the whole answer.

I told them I could be there in about 20 minutes.

When I pulled up, the car was sitting in the lot right where they'd left it. I got into the vehicle, decoded the lock, and cut a replacement key on site. The whole job took under half an hour. No tow. No appointment. No waiting on a service queue.

They were back in the car before the afternoon got away from them. The dealer route would have cost them more money and probably the better part of a day. This one they handled without leaving the block.

Chrysler Sebring Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Chrysler dealer to get a replacement key for a 1997 Sebring?▼

Not even close. The 1997 Sebring uses a mechanical key, which means replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. A mobile locksmith can decode your lock or work from the key code and cut a replacement right where the car is parked. No tow, no appointment, no service queue. The dealer is an option, but it's the slow and expensive one for this particular vehicle.
