Got a call from a couple near Port Hueneme Pier about their 1997 Chrysler Sebring convertible. Their only key had been wearing down for months and finally stopped turning the ignition cylinder. They wiggled it, jiggled it, sprayed WD-40 in there. The usual moves. Nothing.
They called the Chrysler dealer first. Got told to tow it in, leave it, and wait for a spot in the service queue. With a weekend trip planned and the car parked in their apartment lot, that was not going to work.
I drove out and set up at the car. Used my Lishi pick/decoder on the driver door to read the wafer positions. The 1997 Sebring convertible uses a standard Chrysler 8-cut keyway, so once I had the code read, I cut a fresh Y155 blank right on my mobile machine. No chip, no programming, no computer hookup needed on this year. Just precision cutting.
The old key was so worn down you could see the difference holding them side by side. Two of the cuts had lost almost a full depth position from years of use. No wonder the wafers were binding.
New key slid into the ignition, turned clean, and the engine fired right up. The whole job took maybe 20 minutes.
She held up the old key and the new one next to each other and just shook her head. Sometimes the fix really is that simple.
