Got a call from a guy out near the Ventura River Preserve. He'd been hiking and came back to his 2004 Chrysler Sebring sitting in the dirt lot with one key that wouldn't start the car. Engine cranked fine, fuel pump primed, but it just would not fire. The SKIM light on the cluster was flashing steady, which told me everything before I even touched the car.

I drove out and checked the key first. The plastic head on his Y160-PT had a hairline crack running right along the seam. The PCF7936 chip inside had shifted just enough that the antenna ring around the ignition lock cylinder couldn't get a clean read. Sometimes it would start, sometimes not. Classic intermittent SKIM failure that looks electrical but is actually mechanical.
Cut a new transponder key on site, programmed the fresh ID46 chip to his SKIM module through the 16-pin OBD port. Two keys registered, old broken one erased. The whole job happened on a gravel pullout with the hood up and my programming laptop on the bumper.
He said he had been dealing with the intermittent no-start for two weeks and just kept jiggling the key. That part was over.
