Got a call from a guy near Cemetery Memorial Park in Ventura, late afternoon. He had a 2000 Sebring sedan, the JR body, and his one and only key had finally worn down to the point where it would turn the ignition but the car just cranked and died after two seconds. Classic SKIM rejection.
He thought the starter was going. His neighbor thought fuel pump. But that two-second run and shut-down pattern is textbook immobilizer. The SKIM reads the transponder chip in the key head during those first couple seconds. If it doesn't like what it sees, the PCM kills fuel injector pulse and you sit there cranking.
I pulled up, checked his key, and the plastic head had a hairline crack running right through where the PCF7935 chip sits. The chip itself was loose inside the housing. Sometimes it shifts just enough that the SKIM antenna ring around the lock cylinder can't get a clean read.
Cut a new Y160 blade on the HPC Blitz in my van. Programmed a fresh 4D 64 transponder through the OBD-II port using the vehicle's 4-digit PIN pulled from the SKIM. Whole job was maybe 25 minutes, most of that spent on the cut because the original was so worn I cross-referenced the key code from the door lock.
He said the dealer told him to tow it in and leave it. He would have been without a car for days. Instead, he drove home before dark.
