Got a call from a guy out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura on a weeknight. His 2003 Chrysler Sebring sedan would crank all day but would not start. The little red key icon on the dash was blinking and staying on, which told me the SKIM was rejecting the transponder before I even got there.
He had two keys. Both cut correctly, both turning the ignition fine. But neither one would kill that blinking key light on the instrument cluster.
When I showed up, I pulled the SKIM connector behind the ignition column shroud and checked for corroded pins, which is common on this generation. Pins looked clean. So I connected my programmer to the OBD-II port, read the SKIM, and found it had zero keys registered. Somehow the module lost its learned key data. I have seen this happen on the JR-platform Sebrings before, usually after a battery goes completely dead for a long time or someone disconnects the PCM during other work.
Programmed both of his existing keys back to the SKIM right there in the dark with my work light on the steering column. Once the second key learned, the red key icon went off and the car fired on the first crank.
He had already called the dealer in Thousand Oaks. They told him to tow it in, and quoted him a wait time of several days. He saved a good chunk just having me come out that night.
