Got a call from a woman near Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme. She had a 1999 Sebring convertible, the JXi trim, and her last working key had snapped off in the ignition. The blade broke clean at the bow, leaving the cut portion stuck in the cylinder.
She had already called a dealer. They told her to tow it in, and the wait was going to be a few days minimum before they could even look at it. For a car that does not have a transponder or immobilizer. Just a metal key in a lock cylinder.
I drove out that evening. Extracted the broken blade from the ignition using a broken key extractor set. The cylinder was not damaged, just had the stub wedged in there. Once I pulled it, I decoded the wafers right from the ignition cylinder and cut a fresh Y159 blade on my mobile machine.
Turned it over on the first try. She watched me do the whole thing from her front steps.
I cut her a second spare while I was there. Two fresh keys, both tested in the ignition, both doors, the trunk. She kept picking up the broken piece off my tray and looking at it like she could not believe that was the whole problem.
