She was sitting on a brewery patio in RiverPark, Oxnard, on a first date. Purse gone. Someone grabbed it off the bench behind her. Car keys, wallet, phone -- all of it.
She borrowed the bartender's phone. Called the police first, then her roommate, then me.
Her 2006 Chrysler Sebring was sitting in the lot with zero keys to its name. The roommate had already called the dealer. The dealer's answer was to tow the car in, order the part, and come back in three to five business days. The wait alone would have stranded her car in that lot through the weekend.
I got there that evening. All-keys-lost is a different animal than adding a spare. When a working key already exists, the car trusts it and you just add a second one to the list. When every key is gone -- especially stolen -- you cannot do that. You have to pull the security PIN from the immobilizer module, wipe the stored key data completely, and enroll fresh keys from scratch. The stolen key becomes a dead piece of metal to that car's brain. It might still slide into a door lock, but the engine will not respond to it.
I decoded the lock, cut two new keys to the vehicle, programmed both through the module, and tested each one -- start, run, off, repeat. Done before her roommate pulled into the lot.
She drove home that night. The stolen key was wiped. The dealer estimate and the tow bill never happened.
