I was parked near Surfers Point on a Tuesday when the call came in. Owner of a 2001 Chrysler Sebring, Ventura.
She had the key in her hand, or what was left of it. The plastic head had cracked clean at the base and the blade had snapped when she tried to work it into the ignition. Two pieces, car sitting still, and she had no spare because she bought the car used and it came with one key. The plan to get a second one never happened, and now that one was gone.
She asked me upfront whether she needed the broken pieces. I told her to hold onto both of them.
When I got there she handed me the head and the blade separately. The chip inside the broken head was intact. I was able to read the transponder data off the original chip without needing to treat it as all-keys-lost. That distinction matters, because all-keys-lost on this system takes longer and costs more. Having that chip data meant I could clone to a new the key blade blank, cut it to her door and ignition, and get her going without the longer procedure.
I cut two keys and got both programmed. Showed her the chip from the cracked original so she understood what we were working with and why I asked her to save the pieces.
Forty-some minutes start to finish. She mentioned the dealer had been in the back of her mind as a backup, and she had been dreading that call. She didn't have to make it.
